2. Report on the National Conference of Paramount Chiefs 19-22 April 2011

The National Conference of Paramount Chiefs, which took place in the southern city of Bo, was symbolically and politically important. The conference was well-timed to coincide with Sierra Leone’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

It was preceded by a Durbar of Paramount Chiefs at the Bo Coronation Field and it was the first time since the visit of the British Monarch (Queen Elizabeth II) to Sierra Leone (and to Bo) in November-December 1961 that all the Paramount Chiefs had again congregated in Bo for such an event. Report on the Moral Foundations for Democracy Heart2Heart Dialogue, Jong Chiefdom - Mattru Jong, Bonthe District, 19th – 21st November 2010.

“...we want to tell all those who have conflict between them to come together, put aside their pride, remember God, say the truth, accept where you go wrong, forgive one another, reconcile and save our future. It is important to note that we, the children, are the future leaders of the communities and this nation. You should know that children need parental care, not only from our biological parents but from other people in the community. This will only happen if there is peace, love, and unity amongst you, the parents.”   Read report.

School girl from Mattru Jong secondary school read a solemn speech on the effects of conflict on children in Sierra Leone.
